Joe 2nd September 2022

Fred was a great teacher from the start. I took a Chinese history class from him in the 1970-71 school year at St. Louis University (fall, which I believe was maybe his first semester teaching) and he constantly made it fascinating, important, relevant. I was just rededicating myself to class after a rough year, and having him as a teacher, with his great personality, was a constant boost to my confidence that I was on the right track. I was delighted to have a chance to talk to him when he was once visiting the newspaper where I worked at the time in Everett, Washington. I loved the comment about him letting class out to celebrate when the troops were withdrawn from Vietnam! Perfect. Glad to know he returned to the classroom. Best wishes for all his family.
